Nestled in the countryside of beautiful Northern Italy are an abundance of stunning lakes of all shapes and sizes, the largest of which being Lake Garda. With a backdrop of rugged mountains and surrounded by delightful villages it is a great place to start your discovery of the Italian Lakes. Lake Garda stretches between the Alps and the Dolomites, creating a natural suntrap due to its sheltered aspect. From Lake Garda you can easily visit the famous operatic city of Verona. Venice is also within easy reach for a wonderful day out.

Lake Como is the playground of the rich and famous, surrounded by chic and elegant villages and stunning villas, its cobbled streets and expensive boutiques are wonderful to stroll around. You can take a ferry around the heart of the lake and explore all of its nooks and crannies, taking in the pretty towns of Varenna, Managgio and Bellagio. There is a cable car which takes you from Argegno up to Pigra and gives stunning views across the Lake and into the mountains.

Lake Maggiore is the third largest of the Italian Lakes, the main resort of Stresa (reachable by train from Milan Malpensa airport) is an elegant town and also has a cable car which runs up Mount Mottarone. You can also take the lake streamer and follow in the footsteps of poets and romantics of past times.

There are other lakes to visit too including Lake Orto, a peaceful, romantic lake of only 13km in length and 3 km wide and Lake Iseo, a quieter, less developed lake but nevertheless still picturesque and popular with hikers and nature lovers.

The Italian lakes are reachable by air from either Southampton or London airports, flying into Verona or Milan. There are also train services which take you direct to the Lakes, you can travel from St Pancras for a leisurely holiday without needing to fly.

The climate in the Italian Lakes is typical of central Europe with the hottest months being July and August, the most pleasant months to visit are May, June and September but be warned September is a very busy month, especially if you wanted to visit Verona as this is Opera time so early booking is essential.
